Richard Lewis Springthorpe néven született Dél Wentworthville nyugati külterületén Sydney - ben 1949 augusztus 23-án. Ma már csak Rick Springfield néven emlegetjük. Édesapja Norman Springthorpe, katonatiszt volt. Édesanyja Eileen Springthorpe. Tinédzserként frontembere volt sok zenekarnak,- mint például a Jordy Boys, a Wakedy Wak és a Zoot. Az utóbbi volt a legsikeresebb megnyitva az utat a jövőbeli sikereire énekesként. 1984-ben összeházasodott Barbara Porterrel. Azóta két gyermekük van; Liam és Joshua Springthorpe.

Érdekességek:

 - 13 évesen fogott először gitárt a kezében.                                                                                      - Legnépszerűbb száma a Jessie's Girl.
