Benicio Del Toro - Centennial Celebrations of the Interamericana de Puerto Rico, San German (March 2012)

Last week the school where I am studying (Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico, San German) celebrated its centennial. When we first arrived, our directors were telling us how big of a deal the Centennial was going to be, but we had no idea! [...] The guest of honor was Academy Award winner, Benicio del Toro - a Puerto Rican native who attended the elementary school that is part of Inter! Benicio left San German when he was in 6th grade after his mother died. His parents were attorneys here in San German. Some of the girls even saw him walking the streets of San German late at night with some relatives. On Sunday, Inter honored Benicio and made him and honorary Inter Tiger. On Monday morning, Benicio came back to have a conversation with the students. [...] The room filled with 3rd grade through college students. Benicio came in wearing a yellow and green Inter track jacket. A line formed where students could ask him questions. He stayed and answered every students' questions with full attention, even calling them by name when he thought they weren't listening. He gave one student his hat and seemed very sincere. After the conversation with the students came the struggle to get a picture with Benicio. He had a ring of security guards around him, not letting anyone in. It took him about 15 minutes to get to the car waiting for him outside. Another exchange student and I finally forced our way beside him and got our picture with him! Benicio and I even exchanged "holas." It was magical.
