I got to act alongside star David Tennant after dying my hair blonde, reveals Suranne Jones

SITTING in the shadow of Jordanhill School in Glasgow, Suranne Jones ponders the lessons she has learned working on BBC1 drama Single Father.

The first is believe everything you’ve heard about her co-star David Tennant – he’s a star.

The second is be prepared to do anything if you want the part badly enough, even if it means reluctantly dying your hair blonde and attracting unwanted attention as a result.

Thirdly, and finally, is rip up the age-old showbiz adage and make sure you definitely work with animals and children.

Suranne, 32, had little choice in any of the above in the heartfelt new four-part drama series in which she stars as a teacher who, following the death of her best friend, falls for her widower, a dad-of-four played by Tennant. It has been an education.

Suranne said: “It’s been like the comedy Outnumbered. We have four kids under 13 and a dog. I’ve been taught about action heroes and kids’ TV shows I never knew existed, how to make volcanoes out of household items and what happens if you put mints in coca cola – you don’t want to try it at home.

“We went ten-pin bowling after our first read-through of the script and right away we felt like we are all in this together so get on with it. It’s noisy and chaotic but I love it.

“If the kids aren’t being tutored, they want to play with the dog, ask me about what stuff I’ve done and, mainly, speak to David. Their TV dad was Doctor Who – is that the best dad in the world or what?”

While it’s all fun and games off-set, Single Father deals with the emotional minefield of finding love after tragedy.

Photographer Dave (Tennant) and Rita (Laura Fraser) are a devoted couple with kids Lucy (Natasha Watson), Paul (Chris Hegarty), Ewan (Robert Dickson) and Evie (Millie Innes).

When Rita is killed in a road accident, Dave faces bringing up the kids alone and has to draw on the support of friends and family, especially Rita’s best friend Sarah – Suranne – and her partner Matt (Warren Brown).

When the two fall for each other, it asks how soon is too soon to fall in love following bereavement?

Suranne, currently single, asked herself the same question.

She said: “I’ve wondered what it would be like if friends passed away and I ended up with their partner. They’ll read this now and ask ‘were you thinking about me?’ It’s such a weird thing. She’s a best friend. She’s not meant to be with him. Rita is.

“Following her death, the world just puts you together and once that ball starts rolling, you can’t help it because you are so vulnerable – two people thrown together in a world of grief, with children involved. It’s this awkward question of when is it right to fall in love with someone? Not everything is clear cut.

“I had never read a story quite like it. A father left with children is a very sympathetic figure and I have to be careful. On paper, I’m the cuckoo flying into the nest although that’s not how it is. It’s more about the acceptance of the people or not – you are going to take a dead woman’s husband.”

Single Father is not all tears and snotters before bedtime. It deals with the emotions involved sensitively and with a sense of humour, focusing on the aftermath of bereavement rather than the initial grief. Suranne had to go blonde to win the part.

She said: “I auditioned and didn’t hear for a long time so I thought it had gone. What happened was that they had cast Laura Fraser, David and the kids and they wanted me but didn’t see how it would work visually because everyone had dark hair.

“So the call came saying, ‘we really want her but we just need her to dye her hair’. So the bottle blonde came out – and how interesting. I got beeped by passing cars. I’ve done it before and I hate being blonde but it makes sense in that I’m an outsider in the family.”

She was nervous about working with the former Doctor Who in what is David’s first major UK role since handing over his sonic screwdriver to Matt Smith.

But Suranne had only heard good things about him through mutual acquaintances, including current Coronation Street supremo Phil Collinson. Happily, he lived up to his billing.

She said: “Working on Single Father was the first time I’d met him but I had no real trepidation because people I know said he was the loveliest man ever and he really is. He was brilliant with the kids as well.”

Even so, kissing him felt wrong. Not that there was anything wrong with his technique, just that she was so caught up in the drama of Single Father, she felt genuinely awkward.

She said: “Nothing to do with David, he is a lovely kisser but when we did the first screen kiss I said to the director, ‘oh it doesn’t feel right’. But it wasn’t meant to feel right after what had happened. That’s the point.”

Suranne can always ask David for advice on one of her next roles. She has just been confirmed in a guest role in the new series of Doctor Who and will play a young woman called Idris in an episode written by cult author Neil Gaiman. It follows an earlier appearance in the spin-off show, The Sarah Jane Adventures, in which she played the Mona Lisa.

It’s a long way from Coronation Street and the character who made her, Weatherfield’s mouthy powderkeg Karen McDonald.

Suranne, who grew up in Oldham, Lancashire, remains immensely grateful to the soap and the character but has worked hard to put both behind her, even to the extent of taking an acting coach to get rid of the big expressions and over-the top gestures of Karen.

Suranne has since starred in a variety of shows including Vincent with Ray Winstone, poorly-received medical drama Harley Street, and Kay Mellor’s Strictly Confidential.

On stage, she’s starred with Rob Lowe in A Few Good Men and Linda Gray – formerly Sue Ellen in Dallas – in Terms Of Endearment.

More recently, she won acclaim for her portrayal of a murderer returning to her past in award-winning drama Unforgiven and a policewoman embroiled in a terrorist threat in BBC thriller Five Days. It’s serious work – and she is serious about it.

She said: “You join Corrie. There’s a party here and there, you do a couple of lads’ mags then you go, ‘I really don’t want to do this, thanks very much’. Corrie start writing for you, you get brilliant things, then you think, ‘actually, time to go’. Then Vincent came up.

“I’m 32 now and I realised in my late 20s that I have to work hard, look after myself and have a great reputation with the people I work with. Once you realise that, things to start to happen for you. It is a case of hard work and also choosing the right projects.”

Suranne is still recognised as Karen but Single Father gave her a welcome respite – the child members of the cast are too young to remember her charging about the cobbles threatening Tracy Barlow with a high heel shoe. A comeback anytime soon is unlikely.

She said: “Karen made it into the list of Corrie’s top 50 icons. I’m proud of that but it’s a closed door. I’m a believer in moving on and moving forward.”

Erre most hirtelen semmi mást nem tudok mondani, a szeméből szakad a könny és nem úgy ám ahogyan a rózsaszín amerikai filmekben, végigcsurog az egész arcán, szipog és síró hangokat is ad ki.
