Jennifer’s Body Review: 2 stars / 5 stars

REVIEW BY KROQJOCK:

Believe it or not, the biggest problem with this film is NOT with it’s stars. Even with the limited amount of screentime she receives, Megan Fox does a decent job as Jennifer as does her co-stars Amanda Seyfried and Johnny Simmons. The problem pretty much falls on Diablo’s screenplay. The overall story gives very little explanations about the events that occur throughout the film and then nothing gets properly plotted out in a coherent matter. While Diablo is quite the pop culture expert with a lot of smart and witty dialogue (that I’m sure NOBODY talks like), all the freaky talk doesn’t help the overall clunkiness of the screenplay. And don’t even get me started with the ENDING!

As the film progresses, the mood goes haywire. It starts off as a teen drama, then moves into a bit of horror, and then sort of evolves into a psychological drama, and then a bit of comedy gets sprinkled in between segues. Believe me, it is much more difficult to explain.

It also doesn’t help that all of the supporting characters are COMPLETELY one-dimensional to the point where I just didn’t care whether or not they were killed off. Even with supporting actors like J.K. Simmons and Amy Sedaris, they just don’t have anything to do but cash a big paycheck. When Jennifer starts killing boys (by consuming their guts, apparently), their deaths have a big impact on the town, but I could’ve literally cared less. Even when Jennifer and Needy have their hot kissing scene in the middle of the movie, it simply just does not work into the context of the film. Somehow, we’re supposed to believe that these two girls all of a sudden want to bone each other and not once is it ever referenced that these two were even THAT intimate!

Karyn Kusama’s direction is also all over the place. As a horror film, the scares are very few and far between. Resorting mostly to loud sound effects and beind-the-back chills, there’s just not enough horror to satisfy a horror enthusiast. As a comedy, the laughs are scarce and the ones that work are a bit clunky. And it doesn’t help the film’s tone when the funniest moment in the film involves a deer, a raccoon, a squirrel, some skunks, and bunch of rabbits! I’M NOT KIDDING ABOUT THAT!!! From the first frame until the end of the film, I still could not tell whether this was a comedy or a horror or a psychological drama. And don’t tell me that it’s all of those elements because it’s not!

OVERALL:

The only reason to see this movie is because you are a hardcore fan of either Megan Fox or Amanda Seyfried or Diablo Cody. The young cast does as much as they can with the wonky screenplay and pretty much get away with it because they are so damn hot. As a casual horror movie, the chills are few and far between and as a comedy, the laughs just aren’t enough. But if you just HAVE to see two hot girls getting kissy-kissy and shoving their tongues down each other’s throats, then I suggest renting Sapphic lesbian porn.
